Dr. Miriam Wagenschein who passed away in August 2011, was a native of Kingsville, Texas. She received her bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Texas, a master's degree from the University of Chicago, and her doctorate from Stanford University. In 1972, she was hired as an academic planning consultant to start the College of Arts and Humanities at Texas A&I Corpus Christi, now Texas A&M Corpus Christi. After the college was created, she became dean.
In the 25 years Wagenschein was at the University, she was a feminist pioneer and outspoken champion of gender studies in South Texas. She taught the University's first course in women's studies and helped found the University's Women's Center for Education and Service. By the time she retired in 1998, the University was offering a variety of gender studied courses including human sexuality, sociology at the family, and domestic violence.
