New Division of Research, Commercialization and Outreach Will Expand University’s Capacity to Generate Revenue

March 27, 2012

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has created the Division of Research, Commercialization and Outreach and a College of Graduate Studies in response to the growth in research and graduate programs at the university.

“Full-time leadership is needed for both research and graduate studies to support the efforts of each and better serve faculty and graduate students,” said President Flavius C, Killebrew. “This marks another positive step in the evolution of the university’s expanding research mission.”

Effective Sunday, April 1, the newly-created Division will report to Dr. Flavius Killebrew, President/CEO of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Dr. Luis Cifuentes, the current associate vice president for Research and Graduate Studies, will become the interim vice president for Research, Commercialization and Outreach and will become a member of the President’s Cabinet. His appointment will go to the Board of Regents for approval at the August meeting.

Also effective April 1, the newly-created College of Graduate Studies will report to Provost Chris Markwood. Dr. JoAnn Canales, who currently serves in a half-time capacity as associate dean of the Graduate School, will serve as interim dean of Graduate Studies while a national search for the position is conducted. This appointment will also go before the Board of Regents for approval at the August meeting.

“It is my intent that as the University grows in research and graduate studies, we must do so in the context of our mission to serve our community,” said Killebrew. “By choosing where we focus our research and graduate programs, we have the opportunity to have significant impact on Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend, including its economy, environment, educational attainment and the health of its citizens."
