See Video: Burning Viking Ship for Oso Bay Biennial XVII

May 07, 2012

CORPUS CHRISTI, TexasHundreds of people gathered in downtown Corpus Christi on April 27 to be part of a collaborative performance and parade to burn the replica of a sacrificial Viking ship.

The featured event, led by visiting artist Dennis McNett from Brooklyn, N.Y., was presented by the Department of Art at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and included iron casting, live music, effigy burning, and fireworks. The “Wolfbats Beseech the Great Bear of Oso Bay” collaborative performance and parade marked the culmination of the weeklong 2012 Oso Bay Biennial festivities, which centered on the expansive realm of printmaking and attracted printmakers from all over the country.

Participants danced and wore masks as they followed the parade, which began at the House of Rock in downtown Corpus Christi and traveled to McGee Beach. Once at the beach, the sacrificial Viking ship was burned to appease the Great Bear of Oso Bay.
