CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Romeo Garcia, a graduate teaching assistant at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, has been selected as one of two students in the nation to receive the 2012 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Early Career Teacher of Color Award of Distinction. He will be presented with an award and plaque on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the 2012 NCTE Convention in Las Vegas, Nev.

The purpose of the award is to support teachers of color as they build accomplished teaching careers as active NCTE members. In addition, the award provides early career teachers of color a national forum for professional collaboration and development by attending the NCTE Convention and by presenting an NCTE convention session.

Garcia, who was selected to receive the award for an essay he wrote on his experiences as a literary educator at the University, is also a consultant for the CASA Writing Center and a composition writing instructor for the First-Year Learning Communities. He will graduate in summer 2012 with a Master of Arts in English.
