The Island University and other top Hispanic Serving universities and community colleges were recognized for the achievements in a recently-released study by Excelencia in Education, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit aimed at accelerating Hispanic student success in higher education. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has a student population of more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students, 41 percent who are Hispanic.

According to Excelencia in Education, to remain economically competitive, the United States needs more graduates in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math). With the growth in the country’s Hispanic population, the study notes, it is critical that Hispanics are educated in these important fields.

“This study underscores the importance of attracting Hispanic students to professions that will help meet the demands for a highly-skilled workforce,” said Dr. John Fernandez, associate director of the University’s School of Engineering and Computing Science. “Because Hispanics are the largest and fastest-growing minority in the country, they form the nucleus of the group that needs to be pursued in order to get more students into STEM education.”
