CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Howard and Julia Townsend, both alumni of the University of Corpus Christi (UCC), now Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, recently donated artwork titled “Anchored in the Past … Leaping Toward the Future” to the Woo Sung Lee Alumni Welcome Center. The gift has special significance to the Townsends and the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi campus.

“The painting connects the beginning of time at the University to where we are now,” said Howard Townsend, an alumnus of the first UCC graduating class. “It represents that we are anchored in the past, and leaping toward today.”

Howard Townsend received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1951. Julia Townsend earned her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1954.

The painting incorporates the wave, the original fighting tarpon, the anchor, and the seagull, four symbols that represent the University’s transformation through the years from the University of Corpus Christi (1947 – 1972), to Texas A&I University-Corpus Christi (1973-1976), then Corpus Christi State University (1977-1993), and finally, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (1994- present).

Howard Townsend had the original tarpon mascot refurbished, restored and placed as a 3-D object on the painting by artist Dinah Bowman, a 1972 alumnus of the University of Corpus Christi.

The Townsends live in Houston, Texas, but frequently travel to Corpus Christi to show their school spirit at the University’s basketball, softball and volleyball games. teams.  In addition, they support the University financially, through gifts and scholarships.  The Townsends are members of the National Alumni Board and support the Endowed Scholarship Program.
