University Celebrates a Successful Hispanic Heritage Month

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – A festive kickoff, a Hector P. Garcia Celebration, and a health fair were some of the highlights during the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

The Hispanic Heritage Month events, which are free and open to the public, kicked off September 13 and will continue through October 12.

During the kickoff, guests received salsa dance lessons, and enjoyed performances by mariachis and Azteca dancers. The Hector P. Garcia Celebration on September 19 featured speaker Dr. Michael Olivas from the University of Houston Law Center who spoke about the landmark Hernandez vs. Texas case. During the September 25 health fair, nursing students and faculty provided blood pressure and cholesterol screenings.

Upcoming events include:

  • Hispanic Film Series- Films from a variety of countries will be shown Friday, Oct. 5, and   Friday, Oct.12, at 7 p.m. in Bay Hall, Room 104.  For more information, contact Dr. Cristina Ortiz at 361.825.6009; or email Cristina.ortiz@tamucc.edu.
  • First Year Writing Exhibits- This exhibit will showcase the narratives of diverse students in First Year Composition and First Year Seminar and the writing style of students at our Hispanic Service Institution.
