CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Three Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi students, who successfully completed the Islander Battalion ROTC program, were commissioned as new second lieutenants into the U.S. Army during a pinning ceremony held December 13 at the Woo Sung Lee Alumni Welcome Center.

The students receiving their pins were Leah J. Gonzales, criminal justice major; Rebecca S. Hill, kinesiology major; and David T. Melin, history major.

“Having my brother here today to swear me in before he deploys means makes it incredibly meaningful to me,” said Melin, whose brother, Glen, is less than a week from deploying to Afghanistan.

Col. Christopher B. Carlile, Commander of the Corpus Christi Army Depot, spoke as the guest of honor. Each student was sworn into the Army, pinned by their loved ones, and took part in the silver dollar salute. After each presentation, the new lieutenants told the crowd what they were grateful for, and thanked their friends and loved ones for all of their support.

These former ROTC cadets who have fulfilled all the requirements of the Islander Battalion will graduate from the Island University on Saturday, Dec. 15.
