CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Retired Brig. Gen. Joe E. Ramirez Jr., featured speaker for the ROTC Islander Battalion’s “Cadet Forum on Leadership” held January 24, ended his discussion by stating, “Overcoming adversity is what matters most.”

Several ROTC members and Military Science professors and staff listened to Ramirez’s 45-minute speech. He reviewed the importance of teamwork, setting an example for others, responsibility, hardship, and stress management. Ramirez shared personal stories and photos with the audience. After the forum, Ramirez was presented with tokens of appreciation from the Islander Battalion. The newest ROTC cadet, Michael Pernell, was also contracted after the forum.

Ramirez served in the military for 31 years and commanded soldiers around the world. His numerous military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.
