CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Julien Clifford, a senior Geographic Information Science (GIS) major, has won first place for his essay titled “The Future of Surveying,” published in the February 2013 issue of Professional Surveyor Magazine. As the grand prize winner, Clifford, who is from Houston, Texas, won a new R10 GNSS rover courtesy of contest co-sponsor Trimble.

As an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the Conrad Blucher Institute, Clifford, along with former Computer Science major Cristian Romo, developed a mobile application to facilitate access to hydrodynamic predictions for the port of Houston/Galveston.

The prototype led to a contract with the National Atmospheric and Oceanographic Administration (NOAA) and the mobile application “Transit Time” that is continued at NOAA for other U.S. ports. Clifford has won several scholarships and recognitions and is working on another mobile application with fellow undergraduate researcher, Francesca Piccarazi.
