March 12, 2013

Islander Challenge

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Between 15-20 teams of junior ROTC cadets from regional high schools will take on a series of challenges during the Army ROTC Islander Battalion’s fourth annual “Islander Challenge” on Saturday, March 23, at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The public is invited to view the competition at this free event.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 8 a.m. on the Bay Hall Lawn. KRIS/KZTV Sports Director/Sports Anchor Tyler Garrett will be emcee for the opening ceremonies. The event will culminate with a timed sand obstacle course beginning at 2:30 p.m. followed by closing ceremonies at 4 p.m. at the University Beach.

Following the opening ceremonies, more than 120 junior ROTC cadets will participate in three phases of challenges including an Army physical fitness test; rope bridge crossing; a log carry; an equipment carry; and orienteering, a test that requires map-reading, navigational, and compass skills to move quickly from one point to another over unfamiliar terrain. The overall winning team in each category will be awarded the Islander Commander’s Cup. The winners for each event will receive a guidon streamer and all contestants will receive a T-shirt.

Competing schools will include Alice High School; Aransas Pass High School; Carroll High School; Central Catholic in San Antonio, Texas; LG Cigarroa High School in Laredo, Texas; Ray High School; Rockport High School; Somerset High School in Somerset, Texas; Tuloso-Midway High School; and West Oso High School. Each participating school has been allowed to enter up to three teams which can be all male or co-ed.

This annual competition is intended to encourage friendly competition, increase esprit de corps among the JROTC teams, and expose them to the university environment at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The University’s Mobile Go Center will also be on site to promote college awareness and readiness.

This year’s sponsors include Sonic Drive-in providing 175-200 meals for the event, and Cup Graphics donating T-shirts for participants.
