Winners Named at 12th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The 12th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, sponsored by the College of Science and Engineering and the South Texas Chapter of Sigma Xi and its student affiliate members, was hosted March 2 at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Students had the opportunity to compete against their peers in one of two categories, either an oral or poster presentation. The symposium comprised of 14 oral presenters and 23 poster presentations awarding a first, second, and third place in each category. 

Winners from the oral presentations were:

  • First Place: Julien Clifford, Geographic Information Science, (Project with Conrad Blucher Institute) “Transit Time: Mobile Device Based Visualization and Prediction for Navigation”
  • Second Place: Joshua Newton, Electrical Engineering Technology, “Fabrication of Solar Cells by Spray Coating
  • Third Place: Marco Messina, Chemistry, “Reversible Docking at the Micellar-Solvent Interface”

Winners from the poster presentations were:

  • First Place: Christopher Hernandez, Chemistry, “Thermodynamic Contributions to the Free Energy of Template-Directed Micellization”
  • Second Place: Aaron Beach, Biotechnology (Del Mar College), “Isolation, Expression, and Purification of Recombinant Crotamine in Comparison with Native Crotamine”
  • Third Place: Valerie Ferdin, Mechanical Engineering, “Polyethylene Terephthalate Surface Modification Using an Atmospheric Pressure Non-Thermal Plasma Jet”

Other honorable mentions were Cori Speights (Biology), Brady Kellog (Biotechnology, Del Mar College), and Harris Weisz (Biomedical Sciences). Two presenters received the “Most Innovative with the Greatest Potential for Impact” award sponsored by the Honors Program. The winners of this award were Francesca Picarazzi (Computer science/CBI) for her poster and Julien Clifford(GIS/CBI) for his oral presentation.
