AutoCheck ‘Tailpipe Tuesday’ Identifies Vehicles Discharging Harmful Emission

March 07, 2013

Tailpipe Tuesday

The Pollution Prevention Partnership at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi hosted its bi-monthly AutoCheck “Tailpipe Tuesday” event on March 5 to help identify vehicles discharging harmful emissions. The free event was held at the end of the University’s first entrance road. The next event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26.

“Tailpipe Tuesdays” are held on the first and last Tuesdays of each month on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi campus from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All events are open to the public.

The Emissions Sensing Tests, consisting of free vehicle emissions tests and gas cap seal tests, are administered by Pollution Prevention Partnership representatives Gretchen Arnold and Christina Cisneros-Guzman.

“This program is a benefit to everyone,” said Cisneros-Guzman. “For the public, these tests provide a way to make sure their cars are running clean. Clean cars are more gas efficient and that saves money. Keeping our community in attainment should be a priority for all of us and this is a great way we can all help!”

Vehicles identified as polluting may qualify for free emission reducing repairs. Drivers whose gas caps are identified as leaking receive a voucher to have it replaced at no charge to the driver. The testing is quick and easy, taking no more than three minute.

AutoCheck supporters include the Pollution Prevention Partnership, Drive Clean Across Texas, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. AutoCheck is a pro-active program to improve air quality in the Coastal Bend. The goal of AutoCheck is to reduce pollution and to maintain compliance with national air quality standards. The AutoCheck program is funded by contributions from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
