Island Waves Student Newspaper Wins 14 TIPA Awards

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Island Waves student newspaper took home a total of 14 awards at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Conference held April 4- 6 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The awards were:

  • Jose Martinez:         1st Place- Page One Design

                                        2nd Place- Feature Photo                                

                                        Honorable Mention- Single Subject Page Design

                                        Honorable Mention- Feature Page Design

                                        Honorable Mention- Critical Review

  • Michael Henneberger:1st Place- Headline
  • Kathleen Ramirez:     2nd Place- Feature Story

  • Alexis DeLeon:          2nd Place- Sports Column

  • Hillary Vallejo:           Honorable Mention- Sports Feature Photo

  • Lauren Gutierrez:       Honorable Mention- Headline

  • Island Waves Staff:    3rd Place- Special Edition/Section

                                         Honorable Mention- Editorial

                                         Honorable Mention- Overall Excellence

In addition, the students received awards for on-site contests to test their skills in specific areas. The winner was:

  • Brittney Richerson:     1st Place- Copy Editing
Founded in 1909, the TIPA is the oldest and one of the largest collegiate press associations in the nation. Each year contests are held in general magazine, radio, television, online, two divisions of yearbook, two divisions of literary magazine and four divisions of newspaper, plus more than a dozen on-site contests during the annual convention.
