DALLAS, Texas-- Dr. JoAnn Canales, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, has been invited to serve on the 2013-2014 Texas Border Colonia Study Steering Committee.

Colonias are subdivisions with little to no infrastructure land, where down payments and monthly payments are low, and where many families lack basic necessities such as electricity and plumbing.

“I am privileged to be a part of a team that will give voice to the conditions faced by so many families living in such dismal conditions,” said Canales.

Canales, who evaluated a culturally-relevant curriculum project in the colonias, will assist updating a 17-year-old study of the colonias.

“The latest, most comprehensive report, still widely cited, dates back to 1996,” said Canales. “Sadly, in the 21st century, the poor conditions faced by residents in the colonias prevail, and a close examination of the current conditions is clearly warranted.”

Dr. Canales will serve as a member of the committee slated to conduct this study during the next 10 months to identify the progress and policy issues remaining and determine the scope of the study.

The committee plans to meet later this this month in Edinburg, Texas.
