Camp on the Coast

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- High school students from as far away as Lima, Peru, are improving their acting skills during the “Camp on the Coast” Summer Theatre Workshop taking place from June 16-29 at the Island University.

More than 100 talented students ages 14 to 18 are enrolled in “Camp on the Coast,” a two-week residential camp designed for high school students seeking a highly-intensive and creative theatre experience. During the program, the campers rehearse for their upcoming performances in a variety of plays that will be presented to the public with full scenery and costumes at the end of the camp.

“We want our students to leave this camp as better performers and technicians,” said Camp Director Kelly Russell, Associate Professor of Theatre.  “At the end of this camp, the students will have learned about all aspects of theatre from set design and lighting to costume preparations and stage makeup.”

The students are improving their acting skills, vocal skills, and movement through several mini-courses offered each day.  Students returning to the camp have the opportunity to attend a master course to help prepare them for any future auditions.

David Scott, a returning camper from Cedar Ridge High School in Round Rock, Texas, is also an incoming freshman at the University.

“The performance at the end of camp gives us the opportunity to tell the audience our story, but the best part of this experience is the work during weeks prior that we put in,” said Scott.

The students will perform scenes from the following plays on Friday, June 28, in the Center for the Arts. The performances are free and open to the public.
