Ten nursing students are spending their summer treating real patients for the very first time. They are part of the “Fundamentals of Nursing” course at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

The students began the clinical part of this hands-on class last week at Cimarron Place.  They will work one full day a week, at the long-term care facility, practicing their “beginner” nursing skills.  Those skills include using a glucometer, injecting insulin, and updating charts.  This will also be their first opportunity to observe registered nurses at work.

“More importantly, they are thinking through and applying concepts, like patient safety, communication and professionalism,” said Clinical Assistant Professor Leigh Shaver.

Shaver also says this important course lays the ground work for good nursing practice and prepares students to transition into the role of a professional, registered nurse.
