CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Island University’s “STEM Adventures: Discover Your Island Summer Family Conference” exposed families to everything from fossil findings to chemical oil experiments during their first-ever conference held Saturday, Aug. 17, in the University Center. The event was created to stimulate an interest in science and math through interactive educational sessions for children and their families.

“This event has helped kids think outside of the box,” said Deshawna McCray SOAR Program Coordinator. “They will see how math and science are part of everyday life, and will expand their knowledge of career choices. For some, they will be the first to go to college, so the experience is providing them with exposure to a college campus.”

Attendees included pre-k through high school along with their parents. Families in the Coastal Bend were invited to participate in this one-day STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) conference to promote college, career readiness, and family engagement. Families toured different rooms hosted by on-campus student organizations including the Chemistry Club, the Geology Club, Marine Technology Society, and Captain Jay Tarkington, Aquatic Education Program Director, where interactive demonstrations took place.

Tarkington, who is involved in many community events and festivals, brought his “Wetland on Wheels” traveling display vehicle to the event so that participants could walk through an interactive display of gulf animals and learn about each and their habitat.

The Title V-STEM Outreach, Access, and Retention (SOAR) Program focuses on helping students, from community colleges, high schools, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi succeed in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field of study. This is done with several outreach and retention services both in the community and on campus, and in partnership with the University’s College of Science and Engineering. SOAR provides various opportunities for the youth of the Coastal Bend and their family to take part in stimulating interest in STEM through Science Saturdays, workshops and seminars, and special events.
