CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Friday, Aug. 23 was a night of many firsts for the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's soccer team. It was the inaugural match at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium and Alyssa Miller made history as the first Islander to score a goal. However, the Islanders came up just short on this historic night, falling to Houston 2-1 in front of the 1,187 fans in attendance.

"It was a great atmosphere and the support from the community was amazing," head coach Shanna Caldwell said. "I was very pleased with the overall fight and effort of the team. It was a great way to start our season."

University President and CEO Dr. Flavius Killebrew and State Representative Todd Hunter both spoke prior to the match and Dr. Jack Dugan made the ceremonial first kick.

The approximately $9.6 million, state-of-the-art facility is home to the newly-established Islanders soccer program, and the record-setting Islanders track team. The 15,300-square-foot facility, which includes a soccer field enclosed by an eight-lane track, will host Southland Conference competitions as well as non-conference games and tournaments featuring nationally-prominent programs. The facility includes seating for up to 750 spectators, private suites, storage, and a ticket office.

The University announced the addition of the Women’s Soccer program in October 2011, and head coach Shanna Caldwell was hired in January 2012. The first class of Islanders soccer players began practice on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

A&M-Corpus Christi played two preseason events, a scrimmage at Houston-Victoria that resulted in a 4-0 win and an exhibition with the University of Texas, with the Longhorns prevailing 6-1.

The Islanders will return to Dugan Stadium on Friday, Aug. 30, when it hosts the Islanders Soccer Classic. First up for the Islanders is Dallas Baptist University at 4:30 p.m.
