Fourth Annual Summer Show for Youth Raises Funds for Student Scholarships

August 15, 2013

Peach Play

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Department of Theatre presented Roald Dahl’s “James and the Giant Peach” during the fourth annual Summer Show for Youth held August 1-3 in the Performing Arts Center.

Adapted by Richard George, the adventure of James Henry Trotter fulfilled the fantasy of anyone who had ever dreamed of escape. Dahl's story came to life in this delightful dramatization that revealed the wickedness of some, the goodness of others, and the indecision encountered by many when they are faced with crises.

The play was directed by student directors Kayla Gaar and Rafael Juarez, who are part of the National Theatre Honors Society, Alpha Psi Omega. Gaar has been president of the organization for two years. They decided to get the group more involved in the summer productions, including the Summer Show for Youth. The actors in the show were all University theatre students.

The production raised more than $4,000 for the University Theatre Student Scholarship Fund. The program is looking forward to next year’s production, in which their goal is to continue raising money to provide students with more scholarships opportunities.
