The Island University Celebrates International Education Week

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Office of International Education at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will celebrate International Education Week (IEW) from Monday, Nov. 11, through Thursday, Nov. 14.

The series of cultural and educational events will provide students, faculty, and staff with an opportunity to become more aware of the many cultures that contribute to the enrichment and internationalization of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. IEW is celebrated in more than 100 countries and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education.

“Learning different cultures through programs like this will open up your window to global opportunities,” said Vasha Bhatari, a finance major and international student. “For those of us who are not lucky enough to travel the world, the program will bring the world to you. You will be able to interact with students from different parts of the world and learn new things from them.”

The following IEW events are free and open to the public.

  • Monday, Nov. 11 – The Office of International Education will hold the “Parade of Flags” from noon to 1 p.m. in the University Center. The parade will end at the Center for Instruction courtyard, where there will be information tables from various countries.
  • Monday, Nov. 11 – The Office of International Education and the Vietnamese Student Association will present “Vietnam Night” from 5-7 p.m. in the University Center, Lone Star Ballrooms. The evening will feature typical dances, songs, and a fashion show. Refreshments will be served.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 12 – The Office of International Education will hold a “Colombian World Cup” event to celebrate the upcoming Soccer World Cup, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the University Center, Lone Star Ballrooms. Different Colombian regions will be showcased and Colombian food will be served.
  • Thursday, Nov. 14 – The Office of International Education and the Saudi Arabian Student Association will hold the “Saudi Arabian Folklore Hour,” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the University Center Commons. There will be display tables with information about Saudi Arabia. At 12:15 p.m., the students will perform cultural dances.
  • Thursday, Nov. 14 – The Office of International Education and the India Student Association will host the “Diwali- Festival of Lights” celebration from 3-6 p.m. in the University Center, Lone Star Ballrooms. There will be a brief presentation about the meaning of Diwali, and dances, songs, and skit performances.
