CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Going home for the holidays is something most people do, but some South Texas children would like to just have a home. Portraits of South Texas foster children seeking permanent adoptive families were on display during the ninth annual “Heart Gallery of South Texas” opening reception on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center.

“The Heart Gallery matches children in foster families who are seeking permanent homes with the talents and abilities from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi,” said Alissa Mejia, College Services Coordinator for the College of Education. “The Gallery can draw attention to their quest and humanize it, hopefully helping match the children with adoptive families.”

The exhibit, highlights children who are hard to place because of their age or because they are part of a sibling group. The community is invited to learn about the children through brief introspective biographies and portraits. With the aid of the Heart Gallery of South Texas the children’s stories can come alive. Photographs of the children capture their personalities and spirit, allowing for an emotional connection with potential parents. Photographers volunteer their time and make a commitment to work with the children every year until they are adopted. This year portraits were taken by Jessica Block, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The exhibition, which remains on display through Thursday, Dec. 12, coincides with National Adoption Month. The gallery is a collaborative project between the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Region 11, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s College of Education and College of Liberal Arts.
