University Organizations Collect Record Number of Canned Goods and Non-Perishable Items for Metro Ministries

December 03, 2013

SGA Donation

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Members of the Student Government Association (SGA) collected nearly 500 non-perishable food items to donate during their annual Canned Food Drive with Islanders Athletics held Nov. 1-13. The items were donated on Tuesday, Nov. 26, to Corpus Christi Metro Ministries.

The annual food drive is a contest among student organizations. Clubs were invited to make a team of up to 20 members to collect non-perishable food items. Six teams participated this year with representatives from Delta Sigma Pi, Lambda Theta Alpha, Bilingual Education Student Organization, Campus Activities Board, and the Student Government Association. Faculty and staff also donated items.

SGA and Islanders Athletics have been hosting this service event since fall 2010. This year, the winning team of the drive was Delta Sigma Pi, donating 140 items. The group won a private catered suite at the American Bank Center during the Islanders vs. Rice basketball game on Nov. 20.

“Our campus is a caring community of inspired leaders who are devoted and vested in the success of the Coastal Bend,” said Angela Walker, Associate Dean of Students and SGA Advisor. “Partnering with Islanders Athletics on such a great cause allows us to come together to show the Corpus Christi community we care.”

Corpus Christi Metro Ministries was established to provide food, shelter, employment assistance and spiritual care for those less fortunate. They aim to help create a community that is free from hunger and homelessness. As part of their continued efforts to improve the services they provide, they constructed a 10,000 square-foot facility that serves as the new home for the Loaves & Fishes Free Cafeteria and the Rainbow House Shelter for women and children.
