December 09, 2013

Dr. Oliver Conference

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Dr. Marvarene Oliver, Associate Professor in the Counseling and Educational Psychology Department at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, was invited to attend the 29th annual Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy held November 7-8 at the Carter Center in Atlanta, Ga.

Oliver attended the invitation-only policy conference as President-Elect of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). The main focus of the 2013 symposium was behavioral health care and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

The symposium, held each November, examines issues such as mental illness in the elderly, child and adolescent illness, family coping, financing mental health services and research, treating mental illness in the primary care setting, and the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. The symposium, initiated in 1985 by former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, brings national leaders in mental health together to discuss issues facing mental health policy.

The AAMFT represents the professional interests of more than 25,000 marriage and family therapists throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad. The association is devoted to increasing the understanding, research, and education in the field of marriage and family therapy. Members of the association must meet rigorous ethical, training, and education standards of the profession.
