CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Campus buildings along Ocean Drive were illuminated with blue, green, and white holiday lights during Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s “Islander Lights” celebration held on Friday, Dec. 6, in the Dugan Wellness Center.

The annual event included performances from the Islander Cheer and Dance Teams, music, games, and two giant inflatable castles. Children were photographed with Santa Claus and “Izzy the Islander.” University students enjoyed tamales and hot chocolate during the night’s festivities. At the end of the evening, families, staff, and students walked to Lee Plaza for the annual “flipping-of-the-switch.” The switch was flipped by Dr. Trent Hill, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, and Rene Zamora, Student Body Vice President.

“My wife and I enjoy coming to Islander Lights,” said Brian Lorentson, a graduate student in the Fisheries and Mariculture program. “It’s always fun to see families enjoying themselves. Islander Lights is one of our favorite holiday traditions.”

As part of the celebration, participants donated a new unwrapped toy as an entry fee to the Islander Lights Fun Run and Walk (2-mile run and 1-mile walk) at the indoor track inside the Wellness Center. Hill presented a $596.54 check to the Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” toy drive to provide Christmas presents to less fortunate children. This year, the University collected and donated 482 toys to the foundation.
