CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Nearly 700 students, representing Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s five colleges, received their diplomas during the Fall 2013 commencement ceremony Saturday, Dec. 21, in the American Bank Center arena.

The graduates included Teresa Smithson, who completed her entire Geospatial Surveying Engineering master’s degree, online, from the Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan. Smithson is a civilian contractor doing land surveying in parts of Southern and Western Afghanistan that support military efforts there. Her name was on Saturday’s program, but she will receive her actual diploma by mail.

Another graduate, Adam Moss, received his diploma and is the first A&M-Corpus Christi student in the Coast Guard’s College Student Pre-commissioning program.  He is now entering officer candidate school.

Another one of the graduates was welcomed by her own sister as a scholar in the College of Education Hooding Ceremony prior to Saturday’s commencement. Velma Gonzalez received a Master’s of Science in Reading. Her younger sister Dr. Carmen Tejeda-Delgado is an Associate Professor in the College of Education and an A&M-Corpus Christi alumna.

The commencement keynote speaker was Sam L. Susser, Chairman and CEO of Susser Holdings Corporation.
