Department of Theatre and Dance Holds ‘Corpus Christi IDOL’ and ‘Jr. IDOL of Corpus Christi’ Auditions, Finals

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coastal Bend residents will have the opportunity to earn the title of “Corpus Christi IDOL 2014” and “Jr. IDOL of Corpus Christi 2014” again this year. The winner of each contest will win a cash prize and a special commemorative trophy during Corpus Christi’s fourth annual “Corpus Christi IDOL” and second annual “Jr. IDOL of Corpus Christi” contests. 

Both of the annual IDOL solo singing competitions are sponsored by La Palmera Mall and the Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi IDOL is open to all Coastal Bend contestants 13 and up and Jr. IDOL of Corpus Christi is open to all Coastal Bend contestants ages 12 and under. 

Auditions will be held Friday, Feb. 14, from 3-7p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 15, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 16, from 2-7 p.m. in the La Palmera Mall, Food Court staging area.  Auditions are open to Coastal Bend residents of all ages. The processing fee is $10 (cash) per person. Those who audition must be prepared to sing a cappella, or one’s own accompaniment (i.e. guitar, etc.). Finals for both contests will be held the following weekend, and the public is invited to come out and help select their favorite IDOL at this Corpus Christi family friendly event.

Performances by the Top 20 Jr. IDOL of Corpus Christi finalists will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m., and the Top 20 finalists of the Corpus Christi IDOL competition will perform on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

“All Corpus Christi residents are invited to attend each night of the finals in the beautiful Performing Arts Center on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi campus to select their favorite singers for both contests,” said J. Don Luna, Professor of Theatre and faculty sponsor of the event.

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of each contest will be selected by the audience in attendance each evening, and will receive a special commemorative IDOL 2014 trophy.  Jr. IDOL of Corpus Christi 1st place winner will receive $100 and the 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive $50 each.  The Corpus Christi IDOL 1st place winner will receive $300 and the 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive $100 each.  General admission for the final performances is $10 and can be purchased at the Performing Arts Center box office.
