CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Army ROTC Islander Battalion at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi hosted the Cadet Leadership Forum on Thursday, Feb. 20. The forum guest speaker was State Rep. Abel Herrero, who is a member of the Texas House of Representatives and represents the 34th District.
“Hearing the perspective of a leader within the community allows us to take all the tools we are given and apply them when working with individuals outside the military,” said Cadet Command Sgt. Matthew Johnson, an Applied Leadership major. “Cadets are able to see the leadership qualities that are necessary to have success within the program and community.”
Herrero shared his experiences and gave advice on how to be a successful leader. He encouraged students to set goals, stay dedicated, and believe in their abilities as a leader. After the presentation, cadets participated in a question and answer session with Herrero.
The cadet forum brings a series of leaders to campus each spring and fall semester to speak with students and members of the public. Hosted by the Department of Military Science - ROTC Islander Battalion, the forum prepares students to face challenges in their current and feature leadership positions in military and civilian life.“Personally, it is an honor to represent America’s finest,” said Cadet Command Sgt. Johnson on being a part of the Islander Battalion. “I am really grateful that I can work on my education and serve my country.”
