CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi celebrated the placement of the highest beam at the construction site of the University Center expansion during a “Topping Out” ceremony held today (Friday, June 13) on the University Center, East Lawn.
“Today is an exciting day on our campus as we are one step closer to completing the much-anticipated expansion of our University Center,” said Dr. Flavius Killebrew, President and CEO of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. “This expansion will enhance the Islander student experience by providing a hub for our many student groups to have a meal, take study breaks, and gather for everyday activities.”
The University Center expansion is expected to be completed by summer 2015. The 35,000 square-foot addition will include a lounge area, outdoor patio, new ballroom, doubled kitchen and living areas, and a renovated convenience store open late hours. There will also be more University Center student dining offerings.
The program included remarks from Dr. Killebrew; Dr. Don Albrecht, Vice President for Student Engagement & Success; and Angel Monjarraz; President of the Student Government Association. Representatives from Fulton Coastcon Construction were also present. After the ceremony, students, faculty, and staff signed the beam before it was hoisted onto the new construction site. The beam remained on display throughout the day to give the campus community an opportunity to participate in the signing of the beam before it was hoisted into place.
