CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi welcomed students, faculty, and staff to celebrate the upcoming academic year during the 15th annual President’s Picnic held on Sept. 2 in the Island Hall Gym.

Near the beginning of the event, Dr. Don Albrecht, Vice President for Student Engagement and Success at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, spoke to students about the potential for success for the upcoming year. During the picnic, Albrecht shared his experiences with new and returning students.

“We shared our backgrounds with Dr. Albrecht and he told us about himself,” said Alex Puentes, a sophomore nursing major. “It was great to get to know him. I am glad I came today.”

The Islanders Cheer and Dance teams provided entertainment at the event including performances from both teams as well as guest appearance from Izzy the Islander. Guests enjoyed live music from Jake Ward and the Coast Riders, a local country band featuring fellow Islanders Jake Ward, Daniel Hawkins, and Mitchell Williams. In addition, guests enjoyed free hamburgers, hot dogs and cookies.

“The food and free shirts brought me out here today, but I have been coming to this event every year since I was a freshman,” said Daniela Briseno, a senior criminal justice major. “I usually like to come with friends and relax. It’s really cool that they have a live band this year.”

The annual President’s Picnic is one of the first in a series of events sponsored by the Student Activities’ 2014 Waves of Welcome committee and gives new students the opportunity to meet Albrecht. For more information on Waves of Welcome events, go to
