University Alumnus Steve VanMatre Named Freer ISD Superintendent

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Steve VanMatre, an alumnus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, was named Superintendent of Schools in the Freer Independent School District (FISD) on Oct. 30 after serving four months as the Interim Superintendent.

VanMatre received his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from Corpus Christi State University and his Master of Science in Educational Administration from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

During his tenure as Superintendent of Schools in the Sinton Independent School District(SISD), the district implemented full day pre-k for all students, and developed two Secondary STEM Academies as well as the 21st Century Technology Discovery Center. In addition, Sinton High School was recognized by US News and World Report as one of America’s “best high schools.” Upon his departure, SISD and all campuses were “recognized” for their state accountability standards.

In his professional career, VanMatre has received numerous awards including the Texas Music Educators Association Distinguished Administrator; the Telly Award Winner for production of educational video, “More Than Meet the Eye;” Labor Council for Latin American Advancement Educator of the Year;  and Corpus Christi ISD Teacher of the Year Semifinalist.
