College of Nursing and Health Sciences Founding Dean Named Georgia Regents University Distinguished, Presidential Alumna

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Dr. Mary Jane Hamilton, Founding Dean of the College Nursing and Health Sciences at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, has been selected as the 2015 Georgia Regents University (GRU) College of Nursing Phoebe Kandel Rohrer Distinguished Alumna and Presidential Alumna award recipient.

Hamilton will be honored on Friday, April 24, at the Georgia Regents University College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Lecture and Honors event and again on Saturday, April 25, at the Georgia Regents University Alumni Weekend Signature Event in Augusta, Ga.

Each year, two distinguished alumni are recognized within the College of Nursing. Recipients are first nominated and are then selected by the GRU College of Nursing Alumni Society Board of Directors. Recipients must also meet the following criteria:

  • Has made outstanding contributions to nursing
  • Promotes change in the health care system for the improvement of quality care
  • Supports and participates in professional and community activities locally, nationally, or internationally
  • Demonstrates high professional standards and commitment
  • Provides consultation to colleagues in area of expertise
  • Contributes to professional publications
  • Utilizes current research in practice

Hamilton received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University in 1960.

The Texas House of Representatives also honored Hamilton in March with a resolution congratulating her for receiving this award and for her achievements in the nursing profession.
