Island University Spirit Teams Host Largest Islanders Spirit Team Youth Clinic in Program’s History

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Spirit Teams hosted their seventh annual Islanders Spirit Team Youth Clinic on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the American Bank Center in downtown Corpus Christi.

A total of 74 youth members, who ranged in age from pre-k through 12th grade, were able to learn Islander sideline chants, cheers, band dances, and a routine from the Islanders Dance Team. Participants included youth from as far away as Aransas Pass, Rockport, Calallen, and Portland.

“This year’s clinic was the largest in the history of our program,” said Melanie Lowry, Spirit Teams Head Coach. “We were so excited to see so many youth from not only our university family, but also the surrounding communities. Both the dancers and the cheerleaders look forward to this event every year because it gives the teams the opportunity to meet the younger Islanders fans and their families.”

After the clinic, youth members had the opportunity to perform a learned routine taught during the clinic at halftime of the Islanders women’s basketball game against Stephen F. Austin. Many parents arrived early for the game and watched their child become an Islanders spirit team member for a day.
