Celebrated Novelist, e.E. Charlton-Trujillo, Gives Free Public Reading at the Island University

The Department of English at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi held its 18th annual Authors’ Day celebration featuring critically-acclaimed novelist, e.E. Charlton-Trujillo, on February 19-20.

Events included a free public reading on February 19 with Charlton-Trujillo, an alumna of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi who graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She read from her novel, “Fat Angie,” winner of the prestigious 2014 American Library Association Stonewall Award, to nearly 200 guests who attended the reading. This unique coming-of-age novel follows the heroine Angie’s struggle to gain confidence in her body, to resist the horrors of bullying and to accept the power of being different in a world that demands conformity.

“Coming back to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is interesting because when I was here, I had a lot of personal struggles, and I was really just trying to figure out who I was, while getting a really great education,” said Charlton-Trujillo. “To come back here where I am at a place in my life where I am empowering young people across America is really moving.”

The following day, February 20, nearly 90 area high school students from Miller, Moody, Carroll, King, and Tuloso-Midway  participated in a variety of writing workshops, which included a writing seminar taught by Charlton-Trujillo. Students volunteered to read their own writings to Charlton-Trujillo at the open mic session, which helped them gain confidence as writers and develop their unique voices. The reading and the workshops were sponsored by the Paul and Mary Haas Foundation.

“I hope what they take away from today is that there are many ways to tell a story and you don’t always have to be conventional,” she said.

Charlton-Trujillo is the author of three novels which include “Prizefighter En Mi Casa,” “Feels Like Home,” “Fat Angie,” and “When We Was Fierce” forthcoming in 2016. She has directed, produced, and edited multiple feature and short films, music videos, commercials, and television pilots.
