CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –Members of the community were able to get free health screenings at the first Community Health Fair hosted by the Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center on Saturday, April 25. The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s College of Nursing and Health Services partnered with the College of Education and community partners to offer free health screenings at the event including blood pressure, diabetes, body mass index, cholesterol, and dental screenings.

There were also informational stations geared toward helping visitors manage some of their health issues. Some of the information available included help navigating the Affordable Care Act and medical expenses, and information on the benefits of music therapy. Children’s activities were available to make the event fun for any kids attending with their parents. Some of these activities included a bounce house, dry ice bubbles, mask making, and face painting.

The Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center, part of the University’s College of Education, focuses on areas that includes health and wellness education, arts and cultural programs, literacy instruction, and guidance/counseling programs. The Community Health Fair hopes to continue to help the Corpus Christi community for years to come as well as educate people with risk factors correlating with health problems, such as literacy, low socioeconomic status, diabetes, and living in disadvantaged areas of the city.
