CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The best short narrative and documentary fiction films created by Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi students and chosen by faculty were screened during the Media Production Student Showcase held May 15 at the Art Museum of South Texas.
The films showcased were: “Nefarious” by Carlos Flores, “Lucid” by Edward Montez, “O” by Carlos Cooper, “Portraits of the Imaginary Lover” by Albert Mendez, and “Mission” by Edward Tyndall, Assistant Professor of Communication. Many of the films featured actors from the University’s Theatre Department. For Montez’s film, “Lucid,” he drew inspiration from Jesse and Jane’s relationship in “Breaking Bad,” but added the twist of a dream-like quality. Montez says he most enjoyed the start of the editing process.
“There were days when I would sit and stare at the video in front of me and think to when this was just a little idea in the back of my head,” said Montez. “It's an odd feeling looking at it start to unfold before you and take on a life of its own.” said Montez.
This event screened student films from the Advanced Production Narrative, Editing I and Production II Classes in the Department of Communication and Media, as well as a film created by students and faculty during the summer Media Professionals Program.
“It is ridiculous how much the University has helped me, specifically my professors,” said Montez. “Taking Edward Tyndall’s courses definitely shows students whether or not they’re cut out to take on this type of career.”
Each semester, the Production Track Student Showcase offers students an opportunity to screen their coursework to live audiences in a theatrical environment. Selective inclusion in the showcase provides students with networking opportunities and serves as a portfolio-building event.
The Department of Communication and Media’s Media Production Track offers a curriculum focused on equipping students with creative and market-relevant skills in the theory and application of moving image production. Students develop expertise in shooting, editing and visual storytelling using state of the art equipment while working with faculty who are active visual artists and scholars in their field.
