Island University Announces New Director of Engagement

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has named Russell Wagner, former Alumni Development Officer for the College of Liberal Arts, as Director of Engagement. Main roles include overseeing and implementing the University’s alumni relations efforts and engagement with the community to create financial, personnel, and athletic support for the Island University.

From Shiner, Texas, Wagner arrived at the Island University in 2004 as a freshman student. In 2008, he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, minor in Public Relations. Directly after graduation, he worked as an Admissions Counselor for the University, and in October 2012, was named the Alumni Development Officer of the College of Liberal Arts. In August 2014, Wagner received a Master of Arts in Communication, with an emphasis in Public Relations, from Kent State University.

"I'm very excited to enter the role of Director of Engagement. I have been at this University for over 10 years as both a student and staff member, so the University has a special place in my heart,” said Wagner. “I look forward to sharing that passion with our many Alumni. The University staff and National Alumni Board have been extremely congratulatory and welcoming. I can’t wait to get started.”  

Wagner is praised for his strong communication skills, his friendly nature, and his ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships. He has extensive experience in event planning and logistics. He brings creativity and innovation to his position, and uses technology and social media to positively connect people with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Along with overseeing and implementing the University’s alumni relations efforts and engagement with the community, Wagner will also act as Executive Director of the National Islander Alumni Association, Executive Director of the Young Business Professionals of the Coastal Bend, and oversee the Student Foundation Association, a student philanthropy group at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
