CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Dr. Mohan Rao, a business professor at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, is using his passion for photography to raise money to support a student scholarship fund. Rao, Associate Professor of Decision Sciences, will present an exhibition of approximately 20 photographs taken while on vacation in Europe. Proceeds from the sale of each print will benefit the Desi Foundation, a scholarship fund that Rao founded.
“Europe Through My Lens” Photography by Dr. Mohan Rao, will be on display in the downstairs atrium of the Mary and Jeff Bell Library from Thursday, Nov. 5 through Friday, Jan. 29. Prints range in price from $200-$350.
During a two-week trip during summer 2011, Rao and his wife visited England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland.
“The trip was hectic, but memorable,” said Rao. “Lucky for us, the weather was great throughout the trip so I could take beautiful pictures.”
Desi is a loose term for the people, cultures and products of South Asia, and the Desi Scholarship Fund benefits deserving students of South Asian heritage or students who have studied in South Asia. More specific requirements may apply depending on scholarship donor wishes.
“The Desi Foundation’s mission is to provide scholarships for particular students who would be unable to afford college tuition otherwise,” said Rao. “Each $1,000 donation to the Desi Foundation can make an impact of 10 times its value, since scholarship recipients then become eligible to pay in-state tuition.”
The foundation was formed in December 2014 and awarded its first scholarship in August 2015.
