CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The College of Business at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi honored Larry Mills, Holt Companies Executive Vice President, at the 2016 G. Russell Kirkland Distinguished Visiting Executive Lecture on Wednesday, March 9, in the University Center, Anchor Ballroom.
Mills is the most recent recipient of the award that was created by friends of the late Mr. G. Russell Kirkland and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to honor Kirkland’s distinguished service to the development of the University, the city of Corpus Christi, and South Texas. Recipients are chosen for their personal accomplishments and contributions to the success of students, faculty, the University and the Corpus Christi community.
“This event allows students to hear real-world knowledge from someone outside of their classroom or textbook,” said Kimberly Becerra, Director of Development for the College of Business. “Speakers have advice to offer students that maybe their professors, parents or mentors haven’t given them—it’s another opportunity for students to gain more access and further their profession.”
Mills addressed a full audience comprised of students, community members, faculty and staff. He spoke on the role core values and legacy play in business, stressing the importance of a values-based leadership approach and leaving a legacy to be proud of. Mills also advised students to experience growth by stepping outside of their comfort zone, “Life is right here, right now, in front of you—you have to drink it up.”
Mills, who was born in San Antonio and grew up in Corpus Christi, is a 1977 graduate of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. In his position with Holt Companies, comprised of HOLT CAT, one of the world’s largest Caterpillar dealers and the five-time NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs, his focus areas include Strategic Planning, Marketing, Leadership Development and Organizational Development.
Additionally, Mills brings practical business sense to the training and development arena and is the Founder of Holt Development Services, Inc. He has worked with Dr. Ken Blanchard, of The Ken Blanchard Companies, an international management training and consulting firm, to help develop a values-based leadership approach to business.
Mills also serves on the Board of Directors for the San Antonio Spurs, Clarity Child Guidance Center, Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation, Progeria Research Foundation and St. Mary’s University. He is a Member of the Society of Human Resource Management, American Society of Training and Development and Ethics Officers Association.
