Tickets on Sale Now for TAMU-CC 17th Annual Bailando Dance Festival

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Dance lovers and performers alike are invited to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi for the 17th Annual Bailando Dance Festival taking place from Thursday, Sept. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 1.

The festival is open to the public and tickets are on sale now! Tickets are $12 for general admission, $7.50 for students and $5 for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi students with their SandDollar$ ID.

The festival will feature three dance concerts including:

  • Two adjudication concerts on Thursday, Sept. 29, and Friday, Sept. 30, which will showcase choreographers from all over the state of Texas and their works. Also performing are four professional companies – Ad Deum Dance Company and NobleMotion Dance Company, both from Houston, TX, Katia Garza from Orlando, FL, and Danza Universitaria from Costa Rica. Both concerts will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

  • A Gala Concert will take place on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center and will featuring the best dance pieces from the festival in addition to our host companies, CC Concert Ballet and the A&M-Corpus Christi Island Dance Company. Also performing are four professional companies – Ad Deum Dance Company and NobleMotion Dance Company both from Houston, Katia Garza from Orlando, FL and Danza Universitaria from Costa Rica.

“This is the 17th year of the Bailando Dance Festival and this year will be one to remember,” said Jilissa Cotten, Assistant Professor of Dance at A&M-Corpus Christi. “We are bringing in four professional companies to perform and we are hosting three dance concerts. There’s nothing else like this in the Corpus Christi community.”

Danza Universitaria, the oldest professional contemporary dance company from the University of Costa Rica, will also be in attendance. Members of the company will be taking part in the week’s festivities and will help to teach some of the master dance classes. Members of the dance company will visit local schools, including Driscoll and Haas Middle Schools, Ray High School and Del Mar College, as part of their outreach initiative.

“I know they will bring their outreach expertise to our community,” said Cotten. “They have spent almost 40 years in Costa Rica and across the world dancing and teaching in communities where people might never step foot inside a theater.”

Cotten came into contact with the Danza Universitaria dance company during a summer 2016 teaching residency at the University of Costa Rica. During that time, she formed a relationship with the producer, Carolina Valenzuela, and the Artistic Director at the time, Hazel Gonzalez.

“We hope this partnership is just the beginning of a long-lasting relationship that will grow into an exchange program for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi students to visit Costa Rica and participate in their dance program,” said Cotten.

There will also be several master classes offered on Friday, Sept. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 1. To learn more about the Bailando Dance Festival, see a schedule for the Master Classes, or to purchase tickets, visit http://www.ccbailando.com/.
