CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Dr. Marilyn Spencer, Chair of Decision Sciences and Economics and Professor at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, has been named a Regents Professor for 2015-2016 by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. The Board established the Regents Professor Awards program in 1996 to recognize employees who have made exemplary contributions to their university or agency and have proven their commitment to The System’s success.
“It is a wonderful honor to have been selected, and I am humbled,” said Spencer. “It has been exciting to play a small part in the amazing growth and transformation of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in the 23 years I have worked here.”
Spencer, who joined the Island University administration in 1993, was charged with developing and administering its first core curriculum, lower-division student advising and student tutoring programs, to prepare for the very first incoming classes of freshmen and sophomores in fall 1994. Spencer successfully led that Core Curriculum Program through 2000. She also served as the founding Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence from 1995 through 2003.
“While my Ph.D. is in economics, the first 10 years I spent here focused on student success, especially in a student’s first two years of college,” said Spencer. “So my research and scholarly activity during those years also focused on issues concerning student success. It became my new passion.”
In 2003, as the College of Business at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was poised to launch two new economic majors, Spencer joined the college as an economics professor.
“I happily accepted the position to work closely with students again after serving as an administrator for a decade,” said Spencer.
Spencer remains active in projects centered on student service learning and service to the University. In spring 2011, Spencer was elected Faculty Senate Speaker and served in that role for two years. In addition to teaching, research and service, Spencer serves on many boards including the Rotary Club, for which she has been an active member since 1998. She even served as founding faculty advisor for the A&M-Corpus Christi Rotaract Club.
“Dr. Marilyn Spencer exemplifies the College’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service, “ said Dr. John Gamble, Dean of the College of Business at A&M-Corpus Christi. “Dr. Spencer has impacted the lives of countless students through her teaching and has benefitted the University and the Corpus Christi community through her selfless service. I am honored to have Dr. Spencer among our faculty.”
