CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Losing a friend or loved one is always difficult. While it doesn’t get easier, the Islander Community unites during this hardship. Join the Island University in memorializing the lives of enrolled students who passed away within the previous academic year. This year’s Islander Tribute will be held Tuesday, April 4, at 6 p.m., in the UC Anchor Ballroom. Family and friends are invited to join the Islander Community in honoring departed loved ones.
“Islander Tribute gives us the opportunity to come together as a community and honor our students that have passed away,” said Ann DeGaish, Associate Vice President of Student Engagement and Success (SEAS) and Dean of Students. “I think it’s important to recognize what each student contributed to our campus, no matter how long they have been a student. Each one has left a lasting impact on our Islander community.”
The Islander Tribute begins with a thirty-minute ceremony followed by a gathering at the permanent memorial in Lee Plaza. At the memorial site, each student will be eternally commemorated by the honoree’s name and year of the ceremony inscribed on a memorial brick.
“It is an honor to host this event each year and to meet the family and friends of the honorees,” said DeGaish. “I know it means a great deal to them that we take a moment to honor their student. I think it helps everyone heal.”
This Islander Tribute began in 2003 and was started by the Student Government Association and SEAS. Since that time, this treasured tribute ceremony has become an annual event taking place in April.
To date, 62 Islanders have been honored. At this year’s ceremony, the following four will be included:
Natalie Kucera – College of Nursing & Health Sciences
Neil Mukoro – College of Nursing & Health Sciences
James Odom – College of Education
Monica Rose Perez – College of Science & Engineering
