Island University Honors Leadership and Service

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Celebrating the contributions of Islander students, staff and faculty, the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Division of Student Engagement and Success (SEAS) held its 2017 Leadership and Service Awards on April 28 in the University Center. The annual ceremony recognizes those who strive beyond what is expected of them and give back to the University, setting an example of true Islander pride.

“The hardest thing for many students is to take that first step and get involved in a committee or organization,” said Dr. Don Albrecht, SEAS Vice President. “It’s a rewarding experience to be in a position where we can recognize and encourage students to spread their wings and grow in their campus community. Watching them develop skills and learn from their experiences through volunteering and serving others is truly gratifying.”

More than 60 students and staff were recognized at this year’s awards. They met criteria based on service, leadership and academics. Students and staff were nominated for annual awards such as: Vice President for Student Engagement and Success Impact Award, Emerging Leader, The Presidents Volunteer Service Award and Who’s Who Amongst Students in American Universities and Colleges Award, along with many others.

“Many times when you volunteer, you don’t see the impact of what you’ve done right away, so to be recognized in this moment is nice,” said Erica Ybarra, master’s student in the College of Education and Human Development. “A ceremony like this not only brings all the leaders of our Island University together, but it can also help encourage and inspire other students to take on leadership roles.”
