AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi National Islander Alumni Association welcomed its third chapter, which debuted in Austin on Nov. 15 at a favorite local restaurant, Olive & June. During the event, Islander alumni enjoyed mixing and mingling with fellow alumni, dining on complimentary food and winning prizes like a South Congress food tour and Islander Alumni swag, but most importantly, attendees learned how they could get involved with the new Austin Islander Alumni Chapter.

“By having chapters all over Texas, it allows the Alumni Association to have more of a presence, create better interaction opportunities with our alumni and expand our footprint outside of the Coastal Bend,” said Russell Wagner, Executive Director of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Alumni Association.

Thanks to the new chapter, alumni located in Austin will now have the opportunity to rekindle their Islander spirit by connecting with like-minded individuals in a big city. Austin was chosen as the next location for a new chapter due to its large alumni population. Next to Houston and San Antonio, Austin is one of the leading cities Islanders relocate to after graduation.

Wagner explained that the launch was just the beginning and the Austin Alumni Chapter will host at least four major events each year.

“There are already plans in the works for community service projects, happy hour mixers, tailgate parties and much more,” said Wagner. “This is the tip of the iceberg. The Alumni Board of Directors and the University are really excited to see what the Austin Chapter will accomplish.”

At the mixer, everyone met the new Austin Chapter board members, including Austin Chapter President Jaime Escareno, and board members Ilyan Cantu, Hannah Fick, Dakotah Hicock, Amanda Robles and Tuncer Yasdiman.

“The bond we all share having spent time at the Island University has left a mark on who we are today,” said Escareno. “Now, we are working to build a community of pride that will connect everyone right here in Austin.”
