CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is proud to announce Charles W. Schwartz, Chairman of The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, as the fall 2017 Commencement keynote speaker. More than 850 Islander graduates from all five colleges are expected to walk the stage during two ceremonies on Saturday, Dec. 16.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to address the Class of 2017,” said Schwartz. “In recent months, the Islander community has been nothing short of inspirational in their selflessness and resilience, and it will be an honor to join them for this historic occasion.”
Schwartz, originally from Houston, is a nationally known securities litigator and mergers and acquisitions expert. He is a prominent trial attorney who received a bachelor’s degree in 1975 and a master’s degree in 1980 from The University of Texas at Austin (UT). In 1977, he earned a Juris Doctor from UT Law School and a second master’s degree from Harvard Law School in 1980.
In 2013, Schwartz was appointed to Texas A&M University System Board of Regents by Governor Rick Perry. He served two terms as Chair of the Committee of Finance and was a member of the Committee of Buildings and Physical Plant. He has also served on the Policy Review Committee and the Committee on Academic and Student Affairs. In addition, Schwartz has served as Chairman of the Board of Regents since May 2017 and will hold this position through Feb. 2019.
Before his current role as Chairman of the Texas A&M System Board of Regents, he was Director of the State Bar of Texas from 2000 to 2004 and served as its Chairman from 2002 to 2003. From 2008 through 2014, Schwartz served on the Texas Commission for Lawyer Discipline.
“I may not know what the future holds for all of the soon-to-be graduates, but I do know they will be well prepared thanks to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi,” said Schwartz. “I look forward to being there to offer my very sincere congratulations!”
The fall 2017 Commencement ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 16, at the American Bank Center.
