About Peer Led Team Learning
Peer-led Team Learning (PLTL) is an instructional approach that enhances student learning, particularly in challenging subjects like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). PLTL focuses on the use of peer tutors, who are students that have previously succeeded in the course, to guide small groups of their peers through collaborative learning activities.
Here’s what that looks like at TAMUCC:

The peer tutors who lead the groups are students who have successfully completed the course with at least a 3.0 and are trained in CRLA peer education. These leaders are not traditional instructors but rather facilitators who help students work through course material by encouraging teamwork, problem-solving, and discussion. |

PLTL is offered in conjunction with traditional lectures. Our PLTL Leaders meet weekly with the faculty of the course(s) they support to ensure they are prepared to facilitate sessions on upcoming content. |

Students are organized into small groups (typically 6-10 students) that meet each week on the same day, at the same time, and with the same people. These groups work on activities or problems designed to deepen understanding of the material. The activities are usually designed to be more interactive and engage students in applying concepts, rather than just passively receiving information. To build and maintain the study cohort, participating students will be required to commit to regular attendance. Participants who fail to attend 2 or more times will be removed from the group. |

PLTL sessions are centered around collaborative learning, where students help each other understand difficult concepts, share strategies, and solve problems. This peer interaction is an effective way to reinforce learning and boost confidence while building connections between students. |
|
6. |
The activities used in PLTL sessions are designed to encourage active learning, which enhances retention and comprehension. This includes group discussions, problem-solving tasks, or other engaging activities. |

While peer leaders facilitate the sessions, faculty members typically provide oversight and guidance. They often help develop the curriculum for PLTL sessions, ensuring that the activities align with course objectives. |
