Commissioning Ceremony
The Army ROTC Islander Battalion at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi holds a commissioning ceremony the day before each fall, spring, and summer commencement. (Check the academic calendar to plan the date of future commissionings.)
This ceremony marks the transition of graduating ROTC students from cadets to officers. Each will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
The ceremony includes the pinning of lieutenants' bars by the soldiers' loved ones, and the Silver Dollar Salute, an Army tradition in which newly commissioned second lieutenants present a silver dollar to the first enlisted soldier who salutes them. The coin symbolically acknowledges the receipt of respect due the new rank and position.
Families and friends of the honorees are welcome to attend, as are members of the public.
If a graduate earns Distinguished Military Graduate honors, it will be presented at this ceremony.
