The 2023 SHPE National Convention

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is a national organization that promotes Hispanic leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Seventeen SHPE student chapter members from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi attended the 2023 SHPE National Convention from Nov. 1-5, 2023, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The convention hosted several competitions, workshops, networking opportunities, and it featured 200+ speakers and 300+ exhibitors.

“Being able to attend the SHPE National Convention as a group and growing our bond as an organization was such a special experience,” said Jerin Henderson ’24, electrical engineering major. “It was a lot of late nights and early mornings where we did group work on resumes, homework, and other collaborative projects. I feel this convention helps keep you inspired and encouraged to gain as much knowledge as you can. So, that is why attending this convention is super important and beneficial for students.”

The trip was partially funded by the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Additional fundraising efforts were made by TAMU-CC SHPE student chapter members. Their hard work paid off, as the convention had several networking opportunities for the students. Bright Nnadi ’23, an electrical engineering graduate, shared his experience from the convention.

"The networking at the SHPE convention was unlimited," said Bright Nnadi. "There were not only internship opportunities but the chance to interview with institutions, private or public companies, and network with several people in your field. The convention was also not just for entry-level engineering jobs, but there were high-top companies that were willing to speak with engineering students about management positions, so the whole experience was very rewarding."
