Islander Engineering & Computer Science Council: Uniting Organizations and Inspiring Future Engineers

The engineering field can be both exciting and challenging. The newly formed Islander Engineering & Computer Science Council (IECSC) at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) hopes to help students breakthrough in the ultra-competitive industry.

The IECSC, led by student organization leaders from across the College of Engineering and Computer Science, aims to create professional development opportunities, connect students with industry leaders, and encourage cross-disciplinary engagement among engineering and computer science organizations.

“The purpose of the Islander Engineering & Computer Science Council is to build relationships between employers and industry leaders and to strengthen ties between organization leaders and students,” said Brendan Oller ’25, the council’s founding president and an electrical engineering major. “We want to create events and opportunities that bring industry to campus and highlight our students’ skills.”

The IECSC hopes to establish a series of signature events, such as industry presentations, competitions, and networking functions, that will continue to grow and engage the student body.

To achieve these goals, IECSC officers and organization leaders collaborate directly with the College of Engineering and Computer Science to plan events that represent each student organization’s mission.

“I think there are different benefits that can come from the Islander Engineering and Computer Science Council due to all the different events we plan to offer students,” said Alison Tomlinson ’26, a mechanical engineering major. “We want to see the number of engineering students and their involvement within student organizations grow.”

The council’s structure is unique, with each student organization leader serving as a council member.

“Every organization has a say in what we plan and how we execute it,” Oller explained. “While council membership is reserved for organization leaders, IECSC events and activities are open to all students, welcoming anyone interested in joining or contributing to the council’s initiatives.”

Looking ahead, the IECSC envisions a thriving community of students and industry leaders collaborating on meaningful projects and advancing professional opportunities at TAMU-CC.
