Academic Support Services

The Writing Center is a place for Islanders to get help with any aspect of their writing, from specific assignments to general writing skills. 

Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) is a proactive academic support program working in collaboration with faculty to provide academic support to identified “gateway” courses with which students traditionally struggle or could use additional support to reach educational objectives.

SLA provides required supplemental support sessions with selected paired courses. All students attend the sessions until the Faculty Partner deems the students are making satisfactory progress in the course, in essence providing students and faculty a safety net.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program utilizing peer-assisted study sessions to enhance student performance and retention

The supplemental instruction (SI) model targets traditionally difficult academic subjects—those that have a high rate of D or F grades and withdrawals—and provide regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated study sessions.

Request for SI sessions for a particular course should be made the semester prior to ensure adequate time to locate, hire, and train qualified SI Leaders. First Islander Scholars’ Academy (FISA) is committed to providing support for first-generation college students by giving program participants academic, social, and community support to enhance their learning opportunities and improve their ability to persist and graduate.

TRiO SSS Teacher Prep

The Student Support Services (SSS) Teacher Preparation program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education and is aimed at serving first-generational, low-income, and needs-based college students in their journey to becoming Texas state certified educators.

TRiO SSS STEM

SSS STEM is a federally funded TRIO program that supports low-income and first generation students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and Health Science.

The Viking Islander Program (VIP) is a collaborative, co-enrollment partnership between Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Del Mar College.  The VIP program provides a guarantee of full admission to TAMU-CC for students successfully completing the program requirements.
